Day 1: To start off our flamingo unit the kids did a flamingo color by number while I read Flamingo Sunset to them. We all loved this book because even though it is a picture book it told the true story of a baby flamingo. P doesn't seem to enjoy picture books because of the fake stories, but he enjoyed this. The pictures were great to look at also. Day 2: I found a flamingo connect-the-dots that counted by 5s. P enjoyed this because it was a connect the dots actually at his level. I think D really connected the dots just following around the outside but learned some of the numbers on the way. We then read a little out of Nature's Children: Flamingos. After reading a few sections of the book we then watched about half of The Crimson Wing. We have already seen this movie a few times since flamingos are D's favorite and have been for a while. The Crimson Wing is a beautiful movie to watch. It is amazing how the film makers can capture the beauty of the flamingo's life. Day 3: We took it easy on this day and just put together a lapbook that I had found. I cut out the pieces and the kids glued them in a folder. As we were adding the pieces to the folder we filled out the information that the kids had already learned. Day 4: On the last day we finished filling out the information that was left in the lapbook. We used the Nature's Children: Flamingos book and also National Geographic Kids to help us. We worked together to find the information. P was excited when he was finding information and was getting ahead of me. D wasn't really interested in all the information we were looking up so she just went off and played and listed to us. This was a fun unit, even though we knew a lot about flamingos already. It was a good unit to do close to the end of the year.

Last week we ventured to the Toledo Zoo for the day. D had received her membership card in the mail that she got for an early birthday present so the kids needed to go. We did pick the hottest day of the week, but it was still great fun. We usually get a Detroit Zoo membership but since we live about 1/2 way between both zoos we decided to try something new. The Detroit Zoo was getting a little boring after being there so many times and the Toledo Zoo has different animals. We all had fun checking out the animals that we don't normally see. At most of the habitats we would read a few facts about the animal, so we were learning something. I love seeing the kids getting excited over animals that they have learned about in the past and actually telling me about them. There was a huge building that was just about birds! There were birds from all over the world, big and small, caged and loose. The kids can't wait to take their papa and take him through it. We were unable to see D's favorite animal the flamingo. We were expecting this though so she wasn't really upset. But the new flamingo habitat opens Memorial Day weekend and D's birthday is that Tuesday. So we are going to spend D's birthday at the Toledo Zoo, and daddy should be joining us. Like I said from the beginning, there are going to be on going changes through our homeschool and this blog. I have changed how I am going to post on the blog. I seem to get too busy or lazy to be able to post regularly on the blog. So, instead of just quitting I am going to post when we have finished a unit or something real interesting happens. I am going to try to post other subjects such as books being read and different things that the kids are up to. My problem is that I have not been setting aside time to sit in my office and get things done, I usually find something else to do, and lately that has been reading. Thank you for reading and keeping up with us.
