This morning the kids played nicely in their rooms together then half played Chutes and Ladders. During breakfast the kids watched Wild Kratts: Flight of the Butterflier XT. Following breakfast the kids took turns hiding and finding easter eggs. The kids an I enjoyed a game of Sorry. It was a very close game for P and I after D quit. She must not have been into board games today. The kids wanted to make a fort so I had them make one themselves. I was giving instructions of how we usually make one while I was doing dishes. They were having difficulites at a certain point so dad aided them while he was trying to get out the door.
Since the Easter Bunny is coming soon the kids decided to make letters so he would know what they wanted. P was drawing a picture of a Furbling and didn't like out it turned out so he wanted to print one off. I guided him on searching for a picture and helped him print it off. D was writing down some of the kew words I had written down then printed a picture of the Furbling that she wants. They both cut out the pictures, P helped D a little bit. P glued his to his picture and D just played around with hers. Since the kids had been behaving well I let them watch some Sonic X while we ate lunch and I took a shower. After we got everyone ready, we were out the door. First we went and got hair cuts. All three of us got hair cuts and the kids did very well. This is only the second time D got her hair cut. P loves going and getting his hair cut, refuses to ever let me do it again. Following hair cuts we hung out at the library for a while. The kids found some kids to play with, and someone's grandma. We started checking out CDs so we can get a good library of music for the kids for our summer trips. Then we headed to Meijer for some groceries and some nice clothes to wear on Easter. I tried to get D to pick out a nice sun dress but she insisted on a fancy dress. She even had to put it on the second we got home. I hope the dress lasts until August for the wedding we are going to. When we got home the kids listened to the CDs they got and then headed outside. The dog and I went out for a little bit with them and we all played fetch with the dog. P liked using the new throwing toy, Chuck-It Launcher, that we got. I really like it too, it makes it so we don't have to touch much dog drool! When we came in everyone was pretty much pooped, especially since the kids got up at 7 AM this morning. P watched Sonic X and Wild Kratts. D did some activities from an Easter learning pack and looked on Toysrus.com for things she wants for her birthday. Then both kids relaxed with a couple shows of Wild Kratts. Today was a busy but fun day. It is hard to not just let them play video games or watch TV when they are feeling lazy or when they are driving me crazy. I am trying hard to stick to it, it is better for all of us.

The day started quiet while the kids played in their rooms together until they got hungry. While they were eating they watch a couple episodes of Wild Kratts(Caracul-minton & Cheetah Racer). After they ate they played together all over the house. We got enough snow last night to play in so they went out and enjoyed the snow for a while. When the kids came in they had some hot chocolate with marshmallows and lunch. They then watched a couple more Wild Kratts episodes(Huge Orange Problem & Zig Zag).
We started school with our Michigan unit. In M is for Mitten Q is for quadricycle, sort of interesting but the kids weren't really into it. R was for Red-breasted Robin, the state bird. The kids were excited about this because we learned it's call and we see robins all the time. The kids decided that the robin craft I had planned on doing was going to be puppets. So the kids made puppets with my help and then we all took turns putting on puppet shows. It was quite fun and the kids really got into it. Much better day than yesterday! For the by yourself learning, D decided she wanted to start with her reading. She read Bob Books 1 & 2 to me, then I read Bob Book 3 to her. While I was reading she would repeat some of the sentences. D then chose to do an -at word activity that we got from thisreadingmama.com. It has pictures and you have to match the beginning letter to the correct picture to make the correct -at word. When she was finished she worked on some word puzzles that we got from one of the sites that worked together to make the Bob Book printables, not sure which one because we printed it and cut it before I knew I was going to have to know who put it out. Then of course she worked on some of the word paths from 3dinosaurs.com because she is loving those mazes. Using these Bob Books and the Bob Book printables is really helping her learn to read in a fun way. I didn't want to push her into reading and finding this has really got her wanting to try. After all this school work she was done with schooling for the day. P started with english today. In Easy Peasy English 1 Day 49 english he worked on putting parts of a story in order. When he opened up the site he actually said that he liked this one. After the first one he asked if he had to do any more, shows how much he really likes it huh. I had him go through more until he didn't have any mistakes, which didn't take him too long. For Easy Peasy Math 2 Day 141 he worked on a fraction worksheet that he had to match the amount of shaded animals to the correct written fraction. Then he went on doing a deep sea diver subtraction practice game. The kids and I played Monsters Inc. Life and Mouse Trap. In both games I lost and D won. We then finally got out our bin of Easter decor, better late then never. The kids really wanted to do egg hunts in the house so I really had to get them out, we don't have too many decorations anyway. The three of us took turns hiding the eggs for each other in different places of the house. I think the kids ended up playing for almost 2 hours. After dinner the kids got dad to play a board game, I tried to sneak away but they wouldn't let me. Before the game started dad found an acorn top and showed the kids how to make a whistle out of it. P got it to work a little and D didn't try, she was too busy looking for the cat that the whistle scared. So then we played Dora Chutes and Ladders. D quit about half way through, dad got 1st, I got second, and P "at least got 3rd because D quit"(his words). The kids played around a little bit then watched Wild Kratts Googly Eye, then went to bed. So a day of no video games and less TV worked out without too much complaining. In the beginning of the day there was some "but I've been good" coming from them, but they weren't good for long enough. P's version of being good is for about 5 minutes. If he kept his body to himself and D stopped whining we would be good, we will see how it goes. Tomorrow we have a busy day out of the house so we will see how it goes. For any links you can refer to the last post. Alrighty, I am back and have a better outlook on our homeschooling days. I have reorganized a little and thought about how we are going to do things from now on. This is always a work in progress but I am feeling better about our learning. Hope everyone enjoys reading about our adventure!
This morning between randomly playing with things that have been left around D watched Sonic X and P played the new Easter coarse on Angry Bird Friends. On Angry Bird Friends P plays to to beat his dad and a friend. He is pretty good at the game, some of those levels can be quite difficult. During this time I was cleaning up the kitchen that has been neglected with the nice weather and busy long weekend. D even helped me rinse some of the dishes, until I got to the ones that were too large for her. While D was playing around the living room again and both kids were watching Sonic X on Hulu Plus P was playing on his 3DS. The different games P played today were Mario Golf, Sonic Classic Collection, and Donkey Kong vs Mario. Eventually D went and played Barbies in her room. At lunch time the kids chose to watch Wild Kratts. Today we ended up watching 3 episodes: Where the Buffalos Roam, Ker-honk, and Bat in the Brownies. When D was done eating she played with the Glow Dome in the bathroom. In our M is for Mitten unit I have decided to skip around the alphabet a little, mostly because we have a dessert that goes with a letter that is starring us in the face whenever we open the fridge. We were beginning to work on this but as soon as I sat down with the book the kids gave me attitudes and were saying they were too tired. I am definitely sick of their attitudes and disrespect towards me. We had a chat, after my yelling at them, and there will be no more video games or as much TV until they can respect me and follow my directions. This ought to be a real fun journey. I told them if they are going to keep up their attitudes and disrespect me then I will have to send them to school. Neither of us really wants that but we will have to see where life leads us. After our chat they played up in P's room while every calmed down. When everyone was ready to start school again we sat down to read and no one was paying attention to me so we had another little chat and started on their other work, with some moaning and groaning. Today P started with his math, Easy Peasy Math 2 Day 140. He practiced fractions with a matching game. He had to match the written fraction with fraction picture. He has never really been good at matching games and just goes all over the place instead of having a plan, but he seemed to do well. For English, Easy Peasy English 1 Day 48 english, he learned more about inferences. He finished before D so he went and played with his Beyblades for a little while. D started with her reading today. I have printed off some free pages from different sites that worked together to make packets for Bob Books. I borrowed the first book from the library and she seems to love it. She can actually read the first two books. She started by reading the fist two books. She then did some word paths that we got from 3dinosaurs.com. Following the word paths she found a word match from rockabyebutterfly.com that she worked on. She would find words that she knew and match those first then P and I would help her read the other words. I have all of these worksheets in sheet protectors and then put into a binder. This way she can use dry erase markers and reuse all of the worksheets. In math today D worked on some puzzles then counted the pictures on the puzzles with Easy Peasy Getting Ready 2 Days 34 & 39 math. In Easy Peasy Getting Ready 2 Days 35, 36, & 37 she watched videos that counted to 20. These lessons are so short and simple she just wants to keep doing them! We finally got to M is for Mitten without the kids ignoring me and complaining. U is for Upper Peninsula so they traced their hand and turned it sideways and glued it on their paper above the Lower Peninsula that they had already done before. V is for Vernors! We talked about how Vernors came to be and i told them we had a dessert for them after dinner. The kids then started playing some file folder activities. I have spring, Easter, and Earth Day sets easy to get to in the school room. They also have folder activities that are always in the school room like Float/sink, hot/cold, shapes, numbers, and alphabet. The kids can pull these out whenever they want and practice. After working on these for a little while the kids went off and started playing BeyBlade. Then even though it was real windy and cold the kids went out to play. None of their friends could play so they just played together. P had a bright idea to make a pine needle salad, he must have seen it on a show or something. So I looked up to see if they were really edible to humans. Turns out they are a great source of Vitamin C and people make tea out of them. Now I know if I get stuck in the woods pine needles will help me out. He liked the flavor, but he made me try one and I didn't care for it much. I am not sure if D tried it or not. After dinner we made Vernors floats (aka Boston Cooler). First I had the kids try straight Vernors, they liked it a little. It has been a very long time since I have had Vernors. D enjoyed her float but P didn't really care for it. We had some grape pop so I made P a Purple Cow (grape float), he liked this one better. |
