Today we started our school day after lunch. Since our together work was going to take a while, we worked on the on their own work first. P started with Easy Peasy Math 2 Day 142, practicing subtraction and counting change. For English he worked on Easy Peasy English 1 Day 50, working on inference. I helped him write his own inference about a cat. I did most of the writing and we took turns liking of something to put down. We also worked together using a dictionary to figure out how to spell a word correctly. While P was working on his work, D read in the Bob Book from the library. We are working in the Set 1 Books 1-4. She read book 1, Mat, on her own and then read most of book 3 & 4 on her own with a little bit of help. She is really proud of herself when she reads these, makes me happy. She also loves these books so much that she wants a set for her birthday that is coming up. Since P has had a volcano kit since January I thought it was about time that we study volcanoes. The kit had us build a volcano with a tube, string and cardboard circles. I strung the string to make the form of the volcano. The kids then used fabric with plaster on them to put on the string after dipping them in water. It said we were supposed to be able to smooth out the plaster while it was wet, but that didn't quite work out for us. So now there are a bunch of little holes all over, maybe the paint will fill it in a little, otherwise we will have a leaky volcano when we make it erupt. So now we wait for it to dry to work on it again. While we were working on the volcano we talked about what we already knew about volcanoes. P knew quite a bit already, D only a little, from the volcano episode of The Magic School Bus. P and I played the Pokemon trading card game. He has been into Pokemon a lot lately so we bought some cards. It uses a point system to keep track of hits and you have to use your brain to get through the game. He really likes playing it, he even got grandma playing it when we went to visit. D likes to look at the cards and find her favorite but is too young to play the game. The kids also played outside for a while with a neighbor friend.

Today we had a Meet & Greet with the homeschool support group that I attend. The kids were able to see kids that they have seen before and meet new ones. I was able to talk to other homeschool moms. It is always nice to hear what other homeschool families are doing. Hopefully we don't keep ourselves too busy and we can make plans with our new friends. At the meeting we all introduced ourselves and played a game so everyone would know a little about each other. Then the kids were able to play and run around with friends as the moms all talked. My kids were having so much fun we stayed about an extra hour playing on the playground with some of their friends.
We have been out of town for a few days so after the meeting we had to do some grocery shopping. My house is sort of a mess from going north on a whim to visit my parents and them coming home to go to the meeting. I haven't even finished putting the groceries and laundry away from today. Looks like tomorrow will be clean up day before my husband gets home from his business trip late at night. Tomorrow is also the start of our volcano unit, so excited! |
